SCOPE OF OPTOMETRY
What is Optometry?
Optometry is a branch of healthcare focused on the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye and vision disorders.
What does an Optometrist do ?
- Examine eyes to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma or color blindness.
- Prescribe, supply, fit and adjust eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids.
- Analyse test results and develop a treatment plan.
- Remove foreign bodies from the eye.
- Prescribe therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision.
- Educate and counsel patients on contact lens care, visual hygiene, preventive vision care.
- Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologist or other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined necessary.
- Provide patients undergoing eye surgeries, such as cataract and laser vision correction, with pre- and post-operative care.
Scope of Optometry
- Work alongside Ophthalmologists to provide specialised eye care
- Become an eyewear consultant in optical showrooms like LensKart, Titan Eye+ etc.
- Start private practice in primary eye care
- Start your own optical business
- Join corporate hospitals as certified optometrist
- Join an optometry institute and train future eye care professionals
